On Sunday 20th December a peloton of Santas was sighted in the Magherafelt / Portglenone area. Abandoning the traditional sleigh in favour of pedal power, the 34 strong Santas from Spires Cycling Club assembled in front of Cathcart’s new Centra store in the centre of Magherafelt. The cycling Santas then set off on their annual Christmas charity cycle to Portglenone. After a hearty breakfast in the Red Rose Café, the group made the 10 mile return trip to Magherafelt where tea, coffee, short bread and music were kindly provided by the Coachman. As well as providing festive fun and entertainment for onlookers this festive, fun cycle raised funds for Kilronan Special School.

This event is one of two charity events for Kilronan special school. The second will be an indoor turbo cycle to be held in the New Year at Meadowbank shopping centre so please give generously when you see the guys indoors working up a sweat!

Spires Cycle Club runs 2 cycles on Saturday and Sunday mornings leaving from Rainey Old Boys at 9am. Cycle routes are planned to suit most abilities. If you want to burn off those Christmas calories, come and join us. A beginners’ initiative will also be held later in the new year.

If interested check out our FB page or phone either Chris 07540984157 or Mark 07748066490.

Thanks must go to Belfast Bike company who donated two tandems for the event, our sponsor Cathcart’s Centra, the Red Rose Café and finally The Coachman for the entertainment afterward.
